Many visitors are drawn to Snowdonia for its evocative image of a misty, magical place steeped in history, tradition and folklore. Bards, Druids, and mythical beings with a strong connection with King Arthur to go hand in hand with our mysterious landscape, Mountain and the ancient, musical-sounding language. Romance, magic and mythology of Snowdonia make it just as a popular destination for history Addicts and folklore as it is for adrenaline junkies.
At the time of simple, natural phenomena were explained away by the superstitious as magic or wonders, warring dragons or battling giants, or the work of 'Tylwyth teg', or 'Fair Folk'. We can laugh today, but centuries ago was considered completely reliable for a pile of rocks can occur in a mountain slope, because a huge fear had taken the airport and dropped its contents!
In true tradition of ancient bards and storytellers, many stories old to survive to this day, being passed down orally from one generation to another throughout history. Myth, legend, superstition or fairy tale - whatever you choose to call Snowdonia folklore, myth has survived many to choose from, each the next color. Here are some of our favorites.
Twrog's Stone St.
In the village of Maentwrog, just off Blaenau Ffestiniog, an unusual stone stands near the porch in the churchyard. Legend has it that a local giant, Twrog, disgusted by the rituals pagan being carried out in the village, threw a large stone dropped from a nearby hill, which destroyed the altar supernatural. His followers later erected the stone church where he had landed.
Curse of the Mermaid
Many hundreds of years ago a group of fishermen caught a mermaid in their nets while fishing in the Conwy estuary. Ignoring her pleas for freedom, they paraded her around town until, as a fish, siren began to suffocate in the air. As she died, cursed mermaid Conwy men, their wives, their children and generations next. She cursed the building, plant the next, and pledged that Conwy will suffer many shipwrecks, wars, diseases and disasters, by the end of time.
In 1966 Conwy Town Hall, which stood in the place where the mermaid was said to have died, burned. Some residents said they ghostly siren heard laughter as the building burned. Land on which he stood was developed later as a library, but within two months of completion was burned again - and once again, the siren was heard laughter in flames.
City sunken
In the basin of the valley where Lake Bala (Llyn Tegid in Welsh) lies, there was once a town. This city was inhabited by immoral and selfish people, and decided by a very cruel man and evil, who held one night a huge party in his palace celebrate the birth of his first child.
A local harpist was ordered to provide entertainment at parties. Regardless of hated ruler, who ruled the city's tough, harpist knew it would be too dangerous to refuse, so reluctantly attended and played for the guests.
As the party advanced harpist heard a strange whispering behind him. He turned and saw a BlueBird small that kept repeating the same word over and over again: "Vengeance! Vengeance!" - At the same harpist time beckoning him to follow.
harpist left the palace and followed the bird a hill, where he slept all night. When he awoke in the morning, he looked down into the city and saw that it was gone, and in its place was a large lake. And there, floating on the surface the lake was young harp.
King Arthur in Snowdonia
There are many folk tales set Arthur, legendary king of the Britons, in Snowdonia. Perhaps the most dramatic of these claims that Arthur fought his last battle in the region, in a pass near Cwm Dyli. When Arthur was seriously wounded by a hail of enemy arrows, his people raised a cairn over his body, which still stands today and is called Arthur Carnedd - Arthur's cairn - and the mountain pass where the ambush occurred Saethau called Bwlch Y, or Pass of the Arrows.
After Arthur died, his knights came in a cave to survive under Lliwedd meeting and was closed after their entry. This cave is known as Ogof Llanciau Eryri, or Cave of the Young Snowdonia. She said there is still sleeping knight, fully armored and armed, waiting for their king and to awaken fulfill the ancient prophesy that Arthur only sleeps until Wales was in mortal danger, where he will arise and save the country his.
