In today's world one of the hardest parts of parenting is trying to figure out how to discipline your child/children. There are so many conflicting beliefs. It seems everyone's discipline style is different, so how are you supposed to choose which "style" is right for your family and what is really best for your child?
I often find that parents know the principles but still can't figure out how to change their toddler's behavior. Sometimes, you are just too close to see what is happening.
Second, make phone calls, ask questions and schedule a tour. To learn what is available you may want to visit center based programs, home based programs and even interview nannies to work in your home. Talk with other parents who already have their child enrolled in a program you are interested in. Choosing an early childhood education program for your toddler is a very important and personal choice.
Discipline is a difficult topic, but a parent who disciplines a toddler in love, with patience, will have much less need to discipline the child when he or she is older. It is much easier to deal with disobedience when the child is two than when he is 15. However, make sure it is truly disobedience and not just part of his developmental stage.
If biting becomes a problem among your group of toddlers and parents, do try to 'get it out there' by addressing it as a problem behaviour and deciding on the joint action you will take together. It is certainly helpful to both the biter and his parents, if everyone is on the same page. This will stop the behaviour more quickly.
Here are some important principles of disciplines:
Time Out - This method on how to discipline defiant toddlers has been around for a long time and continues to be a good and effective choice. Choose a chair or mat in a set place where your child will be required to go when acting badly. The key to success with time outs is to set the child down for no more than five minutes. Unfortunately, their little minds cannot comprehend time so anything more will only have opposite results.
A Structured Environment
Kids like to know what's going to happen next, and they'll benefit greatly from a basic schedule. You might plan a shopping trip right after morning nap and lunch, when your toddler is well-rested and fed. A regular bedtime is important, too. Trying to dine out with a tired toddler after bedtime is a disaster, and makes for a stressful meal for both you and the other patrons at the restaurant!
Understand the mental level of your toddler: You need to explain the consequences of undisciplined behavior in a manner that is comprehensible to your child.
