As I travel around the world I am constantly amazed by the mixture of clone-like passengers who appear to have bought a kit willing to travel to the nearest store to their travel. Travel is for adventure, finding yourself and more importantly, be yourself. My advice to you is to think seriously about the type of traveler you are and pack accordingly ...
Know yourself
First, think about the kind of traveler who want to be. If you'll be roughing it in the open and cheap backpackers hostels', or are you more of a boutique hotel kind of illegal? Are you really going to camp? If not, leave camping equipment at home!
Decide what type of luggage to take
Backpack, duffle bags, luggage ... When you decide what type of luggage to get, think about what you find comfortable. Personally I abhor backpacks. My clothes get all rumpled and I can never find anything. I have traveled throughout the world and I've yet to find somewhere where I can not wheel my small suitcase. You can always get a small backpack for day trips together.
Clothes
The most important thing is to get clothes that you feel physically and mentally comfortable in. Take as little as possible. One of the best things travel is getting to know new styles and patterns. You'll probably want to pick up some new things along the way. A couple of shirts, a jacket or fleece, pants and something for a special night out should do the trick. I would recommend a cotton sarong / scarf that can be used just about any occasion. Just be yourself and wear things that you will be happy to wear at home.
Underwear
Getting a pair of some internal (100% cotton). I will recommend getting some sexy lingerie. (You never know when you meet someone interesting, after all!) Six pairs of socks should cover all the bases and a set of thermal underwear if you're going to travel to cold climates. A pair The stockings will always be available, too.
Swimwear
If you think you will need to, get a bikini along too. If you come across a spectacular beach or a spa hotel you will thanks to me that one! Remember that in some countries a bathing suit part may be the most appropriate swimwear.
Shoes
I'd recommend getting a pair of comfortable walking shoes that do not look very tatty. Light trail shoes are ideal for raising a-day to explore just about any terrain. Finally a pair of shoes for city life: try and choose some that can work for both smart and casual occasions.
The be intelligent
I often think that travelers think that once the threshold of their country, the world suddenly become a dark and scary. Remember, you can buy almost anything you can get here in just about any parts of the world. If not, they probably sell something much more suited to their particular climate and patterns.
