For me the best science fiction has always been about a whole lot more than spaceships and laser swords. Sure, robots are very cool and exciting to see all the different alien life human imagination can conceive. If this is where it ends, however, you are not getting very good science fiction. Many writers of the genre classic (Asimov, Bradbury etc.) showed us the best part about science fiction is that it can show us the truths about the human condition. When you see a person who lives in a world completely different from ours, and they end up behaving in ways they see people acting now it shows some aspects of humanity are unchanged. Good science fiction books do so and thus make good science fiction movies.
The truths that have been shown to us in District 9 are not comfortable to watch. I did not leave this film feeling proud to be human at all. It exposes so many people have been worst features shown on pretty much all of our history. Racism, violence, fear of new, strange or unknown, greed, a lust for power are all noted, not beating them in the heads of the public, but bringing them to light showing the actions of people Johannesburg when a strange alien mother ship comes down to hover over their city.
Foreign refugees who are taken from the ship, nicknamed "prawns" are herded into a fenced in slum called District 9. They are ready to expelled from the slum, where people think that Johannesburg is very close to their city, and pushed out in a new slum now out in the desert so that people can feel safe again. Reeks the act of handling all the Jews in Europe in 1930 and 40 and even the treatment of Japanese Americans during World War II Other refugees around the world throughout history. Alien technology is bought, sold and stolen. The two men and foreigners have conducted experiments in the laboratory to the vicious scenes with absolutely no regard for their rights, comfort or even life. Basically, the human race now has a chance to perform some of the worst atrocities in history all over again, this time making them into a foreign species in our country and people.
For those who are looking to shoot 'em up action, this film also has no shortage of that and can be enjoyed on that level as well. Shot in the increasingly popular "Found footage" or "documentary" style (Cloverfield, Blair Witch Project), he has a very immediate and physical feel in it. I will not feel the film falls a little too far in the explosions and body parts and loose threads that make it a great movie in the first place.
I recommend this offer, produced by Peter Jackson (Lord of the Rings) written and directed by Blomcamp relative newcomer Neill. This is not, however, the "fuzzy feeling your best" romantic comedy or a "let's go excited all in pursuit of the vehicle "type film. It explores a very dark side of humanity, that we can hope to change, if we can throw more light on it.
