The Department of Defense announced today the death of a soldier who was supporting Operation Enduring Freedom.
SGT. Brian R. Bates, Jr., 81 years old, of Gretna, La., died Nov. 01 in Kandahar, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when insurgents attacked his foreign made vehicle with an improvised explosive device. He was assigned to the 7th Battalion, 1st Infantry Regiment, 5th Striker Brickade High school Team, 2nd Infantry Division, Fort Lewis, Wash.
